"After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi[a] from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, 'Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.'” (Matthew 2:1-2)
Merry- cheerful and lively; marked by celebrating and rejoicing
Ask your child if she/he would like to lead the family's prayer time. If not, pray a simple prayer and ask them to recite The Lord's Prayer when you are finished. Be sure to tell them that prayer is talking to God and that they can talk to God anytime about anything.
"Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.'” (John 16:23-24)
“ Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me by Your generous Spirit. ." (Psalm 51:12)
God's delight in the human heart.
Take a few minutes to watch and review the videos about David's prayer for joy.
Ask the following questions:
Who wrote Psalm 51?
Why did he write Psalm 51?
What kind of sounds did David ask to hear?
When does God give us joy?
Read Psalm 51
When is it easy for us to make a mistake?
What did David do when he people found out about what he did?
Who called David out about his mistake?
Why do you think David's mistake made it hard for him to feel joy?
Imagine opening your laptop to start virtual classes for the day or to complete an assignment. There's only one problem. The internet is not working. You've checked to make sure you've spelled the name of the site right, you've even tried to refresh time after time, but still get nothing. After checking and checking, you finally discover the problem: the laptop is not connected to the internet, so you cannot do everything you need to do online. This is what sometimes happens in our lives. Sin disconnects us from God, and it makes it harder to for us to experience things like joy. This is what happened with David in Psalm 51.
Why do you think distance from God makes it hard for us to feel joy?
What are some things that interrupt our connection with God?
How can you make sure that you keep your connection with God in tact?
What does David's prayer show us about God when we make mistakes?
Ask your children to repeat this prayer -
God, thank You for Your Holy Spirit, and the fruit it produces, including joy. Help us to experience the joy of The Lord as my strength and take away anything that does not give us joy.
In Jesus' name,
