“Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me by Your generous Spirit. ." (Psalm 51:12)
Joy - God's delight in human hearts
Ask your child if she/he would like to lead the family's prayer time. If not, pray a simple prayer and ask them to recite The Lord's Prayer when you are finished. Be sure to tell them that prayer is talking to God and that they can talk to God anytime about anything.
Then all the people of Israel, the whole army, went up and came to Bethel and wept. They sat there before the LORD and fasted that day until evening, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD. And the people of Israel inquired of the LORD(for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days, and Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, ministered before it in those days), saying, “Shall we go out once more to battle against our brothers, the people of Benjamin, or shall we cease?” And the LORD said, “Go up, for tomorrow I will give them into your hand.” (Judges 20:26-28)
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places." (Ephesians 6:12)
to abstain from all or some kinds of food or drink.
Take a few minutes to watch and review the videos about fasting
Ask the following questions:
What does fasting mean?
What does God want to have with us?
Why is focusing on God difficult?
Who do you focus on when fasting?
Read Judges 20:26-28
What makes it hard to focus?
Why do people fast?
Why does God want you to focus on Him?
What are some ways you can fast?
Many years ago, there was a popular cartoon named Popeye. It covered the adventures of Popeye, who was a sailor, and always seemed to be getting beaten up by Brutus because he was much smaller than him. Popeye was always on the wrong end of the beating until he ate spinach. Whenever he ate spinach it always built his muscles and gave him the strength he needed to win the fight. That is what fasting does for us. It builds up our spirits by helping us to focus on God so that we can conquer whatever we may be facing.
Why do you think the men of Israel were victorious once they fasted?
How can fasting be helpful to you and your relationship with God?
What are some things that you can give up that may be distractions?
Ask your children to repeat this prayer -
God, thank You for giving us what we need to face challenges. Please give us the strength to get closer to You.
In Jesus' name,
